Throughout the history, many countries have invented different games that are very similar to hockey. These games used curved sticks and a ball.

The earliest written evidence is traced back to the 4000 year old Egyptian drawings. According to Hurling, the drawings can be dated to 1272 B.C. In the drawing, it shows that the Egyptian are playing a game that involves a horn and ball like object. The Chinese people play Beikou as hockey in their own country. The word hockey was first used in an announcement by King Edward III in England. In the announcement, King Edward III decreed that anyone who play hockey will be subject to imprisonment.

The modern hockey game evolved through the local schools in England. In 1849, a hockey club was established at Blackheath in London. Teddington Hockey Club devised the modern rules for hockey. In the rule, the player must hit the ball to the striking circle from a rubber cube.

In 1886, the Hockey Association was established. In 1895, the first international hockey contest took place where Ireland score 4 over Wales. After 5 years, the International Rules Board came into existence. Hockey became a participating sport in the Summer Olympics from 1908 to 1920. Later, the Federation Interionale de Hockey sur Fazon (FIH) remove hockey from the Summer Olympics. It was reintroduced into the Summer Olympics in 1928.

Hockey was introduced to India in 1885. Ten years later, the Beighton cup and Aga Khan tournament took place. India participated in the Olympics in 1928 and won all the games from 1932 – 1980. In 1964, there are more than 50 countries participating in the FIH. Today, there are 119 members from around the globe. The most recent country that is added to the list is the Bahamas Hockey Association. FIH not only play an important role in regulating hockey worldwide but also in the development of the future of the hockey.

Twenty two players-eleven on each side-struggling with one ball to keep it under their control in which game can you discover this situation?

Well, I know 99% answers will be football. Sorry, I meant Hockey. This is also a game that in most part follows the same rules as football, only here the ball is played with the stick and not the feet of the players. The rest is almost same you find 11 players in each team that includes a Goalkeeper, Defenders, Midfielders and Attackers. In hockey, the goalkeeper is the only player on the field who is allowed to use the feet and hands as well as the stick.

Today, hockey is played all over the world. But there are not too many countries in the world where hockey is hugely popular. England is among those few countries where hockey is played with great enthusiasm. This is only natural as the British Empire is the birth place of modern hockey. Though the genesis of hockey may be traced back in a few ancient civilizations of the world, it was not until mid 1800′s that this game was revived and added with modern features in England. At first hockey kicked off as an alternative to football to keep the cricketers busy during the season of winter. Still in England, the hockey season continues from September to May.

Here are some interesting facts about this age old game:

-Just like the cricket, hockey spread like wildfire all through the British Empire and the colonies took up the game with the patronization from their colonial masters. This explains why the countries like India, Pakistan and Australia (one time British colonies) occupy respectable places in the world hockey map.

-Today, field hockey is played all over the world by a number of countries and this makes hockey the second largest team sport in the world, after football.

-The first Men’s international Hockey match was held between England and Ireland on March 1895 at Richmond Hockey Club. England team emerged as the winner making a 5-0 score.

-The first official women’s international hockey match took place in Dublin on 2nd March 1896. This time also there were two traditional contenders England on one side and Ireland on the other. But this time luck was with the opposite side with the Emerald Isle winning the match by 2-0 score.

-Men’s hockey was first introduced in the London Olympics in the year, 1908. But it took seventy two more years to include the women’s hockey in the Olympics; women’s game was introduced to the Olympics as late as in1980.

First tip from the hockeysticksonline stick buying guide find the right size. Senior hockey sticks are mainly available in 36.5 and 37.5 lengths. 36.5 is considered the standard size while 37.5 sticks can prove more comfortable for taller players and give a little extra reach which can help you get to the ball first. If you have already played with a few sticks from your club you can probably decide which one feels best. There is no hard and fast rule for what size stick you need its really down to personal preference. As a guide though a stick placed against the outside of your leg that reaches your hip bone will normally be around the right size.

Our second tip concerns the weight of the stick you use. This has become less important as most sticks are now made from composites rather than wood. With wooden sticks the heavier the stick the more power a player could get in the shot. However composite sticks get their power from the stiffness and make up of the composite. As a general rule the more expensive sticks contain more carbon fibre which keeps the stick stiff and enables you to get lots of power in your shots. Lighter sticks help you to control the ball while dribbling and reduce fatigue during the game. If you are moving from a wooden stick to a composite one you may find a heavier stick easier to use.

Tip three, picking the right head shape for your game. This basically boils down to maxi head sticks and hook heads. The hook tend to be better for dribbling and flicking while the maxi style have a bigger sweet spot to enable powerful hitting and the ability to trap and drag more easily. The maxi tends to be more popular amongst defenders who like to be able to hit the ball hard while hook style sticks are often favoured by attacking players.

Artificial turf is a man-made surface manufactured from synthetic materials like polypropylene or polyethylene. Made to look like grass, an artificial turf has become a popular choice for a wide variety of sports, which were originally played on natural grass pitches.

Ever since the first artificial turf, known as “Astroturf”, was installed in the newly built Astrodome in Houston, Texas in 1965, the popularity of these artificial sports surfaces gained momentum. Today, a variety of sports, including football, hockey, netball, athletics, tennis, and many more are played on these synthetic sports surfaces.

Artificial turf has become a permanent feature for field hockey. With the introduction of artificial turf pitch, the game of hockey has become much faster and consequently, more popular. Players can now make fast passes with precise ball control. In fact, some rules have been amended and techniques refined to suit the new pace of the game. For instance, a hockey player can now try techniques like reverse stick trapping and hitting on an artificial hockey pitch. The shape of the hockey sticks has also undergone a change to produce optimum results whilst playing on an artificial surface.

An artificial hockey turf can be of three types, namely the water-based pitch, the semi-water pitch, or the sand-filled surface. Water-based pitches are designed for elite level field hockey. These pitches do not have a sand-infill and therefore minimise the abrasive effect caused by sand. These pitches however, require a sprinkler system for prolonged showering of the pitch prior to their use and occasionally during half time intervals. The semi-water pitch is another option available for field hockey. These pitches can be sprayed with water. Being sand-dressed (and not sand-filled), these pitches can be confused with unfilled “water based” pitches. The third type of artificial turf for hockey is a sand-filled artificial turf. It is suited to ambitious amateur teams. Thus, there is an artificial turf ‘pitch’ solution to suit every hockey club, at every level and every budget.

Whatever be the type of artificial hockey turf you opt for, uniform playing characteristics, predictable ball behaviour and optimal grip are some of the benefits that a player can enjoy on an artificial turf. A renowned artificial grass manufacturer will ensure optimum playing characteristics of these surfaces.

Artificial sports surfaces can be used all year round irrespective of weather conditions. In addition, the shock pad underneath the top layer of an artificial turf offers cushioning to the players. They need not have any worries about injuries whilst sliding and falling during the game.

Article by Pete Estes

The following field hockey warm-up drills are an excellent addition to any warm-up routine since they emphasize the basic skills of the game while getting the joints moving and the blood flowing to avoid later injury. hockey skills and drillsOne thing I’ve noticed in my years of coaching field hockey is that players hate running laps. So at our field hockey practices we’ve replaced running laps with a 5-minute long version of freeze tag. Tag is a good way of getting players running around while keeping their minds more active than if they were simply running laps around the field. hockey skills and drillsAfter the cardiovascular section of your warm-up is completed, it is time for the stretching. I like to start out with head rolls and neck stretches and make my way down. In case you have no experience leading a stretching routine, please contact other coaches or a certified yoga instruction for some guidance on which stretches are not to be missed for your field hockey team. hockey skills and drillsHits and MissesOnce you’ve finished stretching your team’s muscles, it is time to begin the field hockey warm-up drills. When selecting drills for your warm-up, look for simple drills that emphasize the basic skills of the game without pushing players too far–save that for the conditioning drills! hockey skills and drillsThe first warm-up drill I like to use at my field hockey practices is a basic hitting drill, consideringthe hit is hockey’s most basic and useful skill. hockey skills and drillsSprint and ShootThis one is a lot of fun and players tend to like it. If you’re training alone, use a timer and play against yourself. The truefun though is when you do this drill individually. Set up a 100m dash and positiona net at some distance from the end of the 100 meters. Set up a groupof pucks on a taking picturessheet and find the players sprint the 100m and then fire at 4 targets in the net. After hitting all four, sprint back. First one back wins. hockey skills and drillsInterval RunningThis is a wonderful drill to do for building speed. Simply run in alternating sets of high and low intensity. A good ratio is 45 seconds high intensity and about a minute . 5 to two minutes of low intensity. This is alsofantasticfor conditioning as the intervals of everywhere intensity approximate the length of a shift. hockey skills and drillsIn-line DrillsOne good way of conditioning in the off season and from the rink is to run drills on inline skates. Inline skates are different than ice skates, and the adjustment frompeople to the other will take a few skates to become accustomed to, but a summer spent training on in-lines will very closely approximate on-ice drills, with no need for expensive ice time. hockey skills and drillsHockey training has evolved aroundthe years. What made use ofto be solely on-ice training has grown uptowards a mixture, with off-ice, dryland training becoming an inclusive part of the conditioning programs required for becoming a better ice hockey player, with a more complete set of hockey skills. Goalies are no exception.

Article by Sunil Jajodia

Today more and more people enjoy playing different kinds of sports like rugby, cricket, field hockey and others. Being fully equipped and wearing proper clothes is one of the most essential means to make your game as effective as possible. Of course, you need to be physically fit to go in for these kinds of sports but this problem can be easily solved through training. But if you don’t protect your body properly you might receive serious injury and that may knock you out of the game for a long time.Playing field hockey requires not only the mastery of using hockey sticks but also a lot of stamina and strength. Apart from that, all players need to be properly geared for the game. There’s a wide variety of stores offering high quality hockey equipment at reasonable prices. So you’re likely to find anything you need without breaking the bank. Hockey essentials include shoes, gloves, shorts, shirts, protective gear like shin pads, goal keeping helmets, kickers and others.Of course, there’s no field hockey without hockey sticks and a ball, so they’re probably the most essential pieces of the player’s gear. Originally field hockey was played using a leather-covered cricket ball but today the ball is usually white plastic. Some balls are even dimpled like golf balls. A properly hit ball can reach speeds of up to one hundred miles per hour. That’s why it’s of vital importance to wear protective pads and guards to reduce the shock of a hit ball.As for hockey sticks, some of them are made from wood and can be reinforced with fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon or other similar materials. Usually, they’re no longer than thirty eight inches and have a flat striking surface. Today they’re made according to high-end technologies so that to increase overall power and balance. To ensure the best grip of the stick, there are a few points to consider when purchasing. First, it’s worth looking into hockey sticks made from different materials. Traditionally they are made from ash or mulberry wood, providing them with a firm form and more efficient hitting but now composite materials such as carbon, kevlar and fibre glass are used. Handles are commonly made from rubber and suede with the latter being the most preferable as suede may not sweat as much as rubber under a firm grip. In addition, it’s important to choose the right weight of the stick. As they can come in light, medium or heavy weights, it might be a good idea to see which one works best for you by trying to control the stick with one hand.Apart from hockey sticks and balls, players may buy training equipment as well. It can include evasion belts, safety cones, leg toners, reaction balls, speed agility ladders, power and speed parachutes and others. This equipment is used to increase the player’s effectiveness, speed and overall power on the field. On the whole, field hockey might be very challenging, like any other field sport. Hence, it’s crucial to take all measures to avoid possible risk or injury that might occur during the game. These measures often include purchasing the right equipment and protective clothing.

Before having a wonderful hockey game players should do more exercise in the training program given by the professional coaches. Besides the necessary preparation players need to do, there need to find sponsors to fund the hockey league. With coming of next season, most of the plans for the year’s hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions are in place. And, love it or hate it, there is a very good chance that your team or organization has starting talking about, or is in the process of fundraising for the skating season. Then, how to find beneficial fundraise for your hockey team or league is the necessary thing you should consider about. As a company in the field of skating, we understand the importance and need for fundraising. I took the time to talk to our extensive network of entrepreneurs and managers who, like us, came to requests for fundraising numbers. Now, let’s look at some effective fundraising skills for supporting your hockey league. For the fundraising committee organized! Five parents of the same team are approaching the same task, five installments, not to encourage support. With the support of sponsor, players can have the opportunity to wear nhl jerseys wholesale in their training program. I appreciate that people may have to stop a task after a look at the requirements of fundraising teams. Planning for the future, plan, plan ahead. Approach a potential sponsor (business) so much as a year in advance and ask if they could work in a fundraising event in the next year’s budget. Corporate events is usually the budget that will always be a sponsor, but the balance of the budget is often a first-come, first serve, get in line early! Contact the companies well before the event with a well-written letter on team letterhead with a phone number that can be used to clarify or verify the claim. Walk in the door 2 (or even less) days before the event is disrespectful of the company. Most companies have a system and process in place for the distribution of prizes or money that will take time. Before sending street teams, make sure everyone is clear about what the requirements are. Players usually need to wear ravens football jerseys in their training program. Are they looking for auction items for fundraising, or looking for money. Are you ready to take “in kind” items. Especially if you ask for money (even if you do not) ready to provide a benefit of considerable value to the business of writing a check or provide an auction. It is much easier to raise money from companies or individuals, when you can claim that the elements of all proceeds go to support charity. Also, since you are raising funds for charity, people will approach you, to support, in particular, are more likely to donate to your fund-raising, though not skate or skating in the family. Players usually wear wholesale hockey jerseys in their training program. With find more sponsors to fund the hockey league, the hockey team can have more chances and ability to win the game.
